Its amazing to me to see all of the ad industry chatter these days regarding the new Video iPod and how Apple's video distribution deal with Disney (via iTunes) has significant possibility of altering the traditional TV landscape without their being any mention of Sony's video distribution play via their LocationFree platform. Introduced in Japan this past February, Sony's LocationFree TV has just recently been added to their Play Station Portables (PSP) latest Firmware Update (2.5). This allows PSP owners, after connecting their TV, DVD, DVR, etc. to Sony's LocationFree Tuner (Cost=$300) to stream whatever content they wish via any WiFi connection in the world.
Early tests suggest that the current user experience with LocationFree TV is a mixed bag. However, this technology is only in its first generation and has a lot of room to grow. Regardless, it holds significant promise to alter the media distribution landscape.
