I think the next big war in search engines will be between organic vs. paid and how well your paid results can masquerade as organic.

My dad, who should be considered an average computer user for his age, asked me how Google made their money. Similarly, I am amazed every day by the fact that most people aren't even aware that search engines make money the way they do: ranking and highlighting results.

Search engines like Google still carry the aura of "run from a garage by a bunch of guys who want to help you out."

As their handsomely-paid nature becomes more and more apparent, they need to find a way to maintain their partiality or they'll be taken over by a bunch of search engines run from a garage.

People don't want information from the site that paid google the most money, they want information from the site who knows it best. (especially when it comes to issues like health as your article suggests)

I would definetely be interested in a search engine that only made money from banner ads and yet could crawl and retrieve as effectively as Google.
