Work/play space pops up in the U.K. to support new emergent worker class
I recently came across a listing on Soflow that promoted a gathering at ADAM STREET in London. What caught my eye was the caveat that ADAM STREET is a private members club. This prompted me to visit their web site and explore their deal.
What I found was a unique approach to the notion of a work/play environment. On the home page of their site, the proprietors of Adam Street do not pull
and punches and are explicit to whom their club serves:
“ADAM STREET is specifically designed for people who work for themselves: fully equipped for work and play and a useful (but fun) retreat for hardworking intelligent, good looking, fun, witty and charming people who like to mix business with pleasure”.
In a word, the club has been designed to suite the new type of worker (Freelancer, Self-Employed, Entrepreneur, etc.) who does not have a traditional office space but works for themselves, by themselves, or in small teams of individuals.
Members enjoy such amenities as a library that houses connected desk space/work booths, computers, scanners, printing facilities, telephony, and a tv/dvd. Beyond the work environment, an additional array of business support services is also afforded, including secretarial help and admin support.
The Central London digs also boasts a restaurant, bar, and private function rooms designed to be as flexible as possible for breakfasts, lunches, dinners, parties, meetings, private viewings, readings, presentations, launches, show-cases, etc.
Membership to ADAM STREET is by invitation only. Furthermore, there are different evels of annual dues based on your situation (i.e. country member vs. overseas member vs. young and beautiful member (i.e. under 26yo)).
I am interested to see if more of these types of facilities (private or public) begin to pop up around the globe. If anyone knows of any other examples of an ADAM STREETesque approach, do share.
